According to the AP news agency, at least 19 people were killed and more than 70 individuals were injured to varying degrees as a result of the incident.
Videos circulated on social media showed that the force of the powerful blast overturned two carriages of the train, which caught fire, while thick black smoke covered the surroundings.
According to witnesses and photographs, the attack occurred close to an area where security forces are usually stationed. The blast damaged several nearby buildings and also damaged more than ten vehicles parked along the road.
The injured have been taken to hospitals, and 20 of them are reported to be in serious condition.
The banned "Balochistan Liberation Army" (BLA) group, which has been demanding independence from Pakistan's central government, has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the group said the train carrying security personnel was targeted.
The spokesperson for the Balochistan provincial government, Shahid Rind, expressed "deep sorrow over the loss of innocent civilians and the deaths of people as a result of the attack."
According to him, a state of emergency was declared in all hospitals in Quetta after the blast, and an investigation into the incident has been launched.
Although the Pakistani government insists that insurgent movements have been suppressed, violent incidents continue in the Balochistan region.
