Uzbekistan will now implement a system for constant radar space monitoring of the earthquake resistance of reservoir dams. This was reported by the “Uzbecosmos” press service here.
As noted, this is stipulated by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, as indicated , where the dynamics of dams’ displacement and subsidence will be under space surveillance by the “Uzbecosmos” agency. The results of the conducted monitoring will be integrated into the “Seismic Observations in Reservoirs” electronic platform.
The electronic platform will compile the results of space monitoring of the reservoirs, including the current condition of the dams, their displacement and subsidence indicators, the seismic stability of the dams, and their emergency risk levels. For the purpose of continuous monitoring, the “Commission for the Study of Reservoir Dams’ Earthquake Resistance through Space Monitoring” will be established.
“Continuous monitoring of the stability level of the reservoir dams is of great importance in assessing their deformation-stress condition, because in the deformation-stress state, the dam becomes susceptible to earthquakes and the possibility of disaster increases at its weakest point in the event of an emergency,” states the agency's report.
As noted, these measures will allow for continuous study of the condition of stability and functionality of the dams in the reservoirs, analyzing potential emergency situations in advance, and detecting possible displacements within them.
