The ceremony for establishing the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) office in Tashkent city took place within the framework of the COP16 conference being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia took place.
The document was signed by Aziz Abduhakimov, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change, and Gretel Aguilar, Director General of IUCN.
The Union’s office opened in February 2024 at the Central Asian University for Environmental and Climate Change Studies (Green University), and the agreement signed today serves as the legal basis for the IUCN’s activities in the country and ensures cooperation with state agencies opened.
"Ecological problems know no borders, which means that uniting efforts and transboundary cooperation are important. We are pleased that the IUCN office in Tashkent will serve not only Uzbekistan but also the entire Central Asian region, fostering regional cooperation in the fields of nature conservation and sustainable development," — said Aziz Abduhakimov.
Gretel Aguilar expressed gratitude to Uzbekistan for providing an opportunity to significantly contribute to the efforts in conserving the region's unique biodiversity and valuable natural resources.
