In the early elections to the German Bundestag, the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union conservative block won by gathering 28.5 percent of the votes.
“Alternative for Germany” secured second place for the first time in its history with 20.8% of the votes. The incumbent Chancellor Scholz's Social Democratic Party of Germany came in third with 16.4% of the votes. This is the SPD's worst result in its history.
The Free Democratic Party (4.3%) and the left-populist Sara Wagenknecht's alliance (4.97%) did not make it into the Bundestag. To gain a seat in the Bundestag, parties must collect at least 5% of the votes.
