The German Foreign Ministry expressed that the arrest of Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, which caused protests, is diminishing Turkey's chances of joining the European Union.
"The measures applied against Ekrem İmamoğlu and others are increasingly turning Turkey's commitments to join the EU into a mere promise. There is no place for political opponents in prison or in court. A country that sees its future in the European Union must ensure the supremacy of the law," states the announcement published on the German Foreign Ministry's X social network.
Turkey has been a candidate country for European Union membership since 1995.
