Hamas announced on October 7, 2023, that it would release captured Israeli soldier Idan Alexander.
This decision was announced on the eve of US President Donald Trump's visit to the Middle East. The movement called this step part of negotiations on a ceasefire and the resumption of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
He is expected to be released within the next 48 hours. Hamas hopes that Trump will thereby persuade Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach an agreement to end the war.
Trump's representative for the Middle East conveyed this news to Eden's family. Trump, however, called this action "a sign of goodwill for the US and its intermediaries - Qatar and Egypt."
The Israeli government, however, claims that no concessions were granted for the liberation of Edan, citing this as a result of military pressure. Israel has not undertaken any commitments to a ceasefire.
