US President Donald Trump is considering imposing new sanctions against Russia this week, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal. The publication writes that Trump is increasingly displeased with Russian President Vladimir Putin's attacks on Ukraine and the slow pace of peace negotiations .
According to sources, the restrictions being considered may not include new banking sanctions, but other forms of pressure to encourage Putin to make concessions in negotiations are being discussed. Specifically, a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine supports but Russia rejects, is noted as significant.
However, the publication emphasizes that Trump might also decide against imposing any sanctions. According to the WSJ: “Trump is tired of the peace negotiations” and is considering abandoning them entirely if "the last attempt does not bring results."
Furthermore, the article states: "If the US withdraws from the peace process, what will happen and whether Trump will continue military support for Ukraine remains unknown", — it says.
In recent weeks, Trump has resisted pressure to openly criticize Putin for rejecting the ceasefire supported by Ukraine. But according to WSJ sources, three key factors have influenced his stance:
1. Dislike towards Zelensky. Trump has blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for "escalating the conflict", despite demanding sanctions, has accepted a ceasefire.
2. Ineffectiveness of sanctions. Trump believes that additional sanctions will not significantly impact Russia's ability to wage war but will complicate the process of restoring US-Russia economic relations.
3. Personal trust in Putin. Trump considers himself well-acquainted with Putin, expecting a cessation as a "personal favor". However, during a phone call last week, Putin's refusal to sign the ceasefire agreement changed Trump’s opinion of him for the worse.
Additionally, Trump announced on Sunday that he was considering imposing new sanctions against Russia following the latest missile strikes on Ukraine.
Prior to this, Trump had harshly criticized Putin, calling him "totally mad" and stating, “If Putin tries to take over all of Ukraine, it will lead to Russia's collapse,”.
During a recent interview with journalists, Trump expressed strong dissatisfaction with Putin's actions and noted that he does not understand the rationale behind Russia's current actions.
According to the Ukrainian Air Forces, on the night of May 25, 2025, Russia used 367 various air attack weapons against Ukraine. As a result, 13 regions of the country were damaged, over 80 residential buildings were destroyed, 12 people were killed, and another 60 were injured.
In response, the European Union's ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Maternova, said: "Russia is mocking the world and the US efforts to establish peace", — she evaluated.
Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on the West to respond strongly to Russia's new wave of attacks. In his opinion, “Putin must feel the real cost of the war”.
