The administration of Donald Trump may take drastic measures against the European Union, especially by cutting off its internet connection. This is being justified by Europe's digital infrastructure being heavily dependent on U.S. companies, according to reporting by zamon.uz.
Head of the Center for European Policy Analysis, Zak Mars, says about this: “Such a thought used to seem absurd. However, today, a leader like Trump could well order the shutdown of the internet or cause serious harm to the European economy, transforming this into a viable scenario”.
Alexander Windbichler, head of Austria's "Anexia" services company, also called on European IT sector representatives to be cautious of excessive technological dependence on America. According to him, Europe is currently in a weak position as a result of focusing more on competitiveness than on digital security and sovereignty.
As noted by Politico, in the European IT infrastructure, the leading services of the U.S. — Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud — occupy more than two-thirds of the market. In the field of artificial intelligence, Europe is significantly behind the U.S., and in microchip production, its global share is less than 10 percent.
Therefore, Europe is now seriously considering issues of digital independence and technological security. At the same time, maintaining digital cooperation with the U.S. remains one of the primary strategic directions.
