It has been reported that the investigation is related to illegal content involving minors, sexually explicit deepfake videos, and Holocaust denial posts disseminated via the Grok artificial intelligence on X.
Three months ago, French police conducted a search at X's office in Paris. Subsequently, Musk and the company's former head, Linda Yaccarino, were summoned for questioning, but they did not appear. Now, the French side is considering the issue of forcibly bringing them in for questioning.
According to the Paris prosecutor's office, the main goal of the investigation is to protect victims of online crimes. French media report that X has refused to provide its algorithm despite a court order. Investigating judges are considering the issue of preparing formal charges against X Corp., xAI, Elon Musk, and Linda Yaccarino.
French deputy Eric Bothorel called Musk's failure to appear for questioning a wrong decision. Following his appeal, a preliminary investigation was launched in January 2025. In France, such processes can take months or even years.
After the searches, X assessed France's actions as a "politicized investigation". The U.S. Department of Justice, meanwhile, refused to assist France in this case.
Currently, within the framework of the investigation, charges such as distributing illegal content, violating individual rights, denying crimes against humanity, and failing to securely safeguard personal data are being examined.
