On July 1 of the current year, Azerbaijan's Minval publication released an explanation letter from a Russian military serviceman.
In it, the officer admits to mistakenly targeting an AZAL (Azerbaijan Airlines) passenger aircraft flying on the Baku–Grozny route in December 2024.
Russian journalists have confirmed that the author of this document is indeed an active military serviceman and have managed to get in touch with him.
According to sources close to the investigation, this explanatory letter is being assessed as “possibly authentic,” according to The Insider.
This incident raises serious security concerns. Officials and military agencies have not yet commented.
