According to US President Donald Trump, Russian leader Vladimir Putin will be forced to halt military operations in Ukraine if oil prices drop.
"If energy prices fall sufficiently, Putin will stop killing people. If oil becomes $10 cheaper, he will have no other choice—the Russian economy is in terrible shape," Trump said during a CNBC broadcast.
For reference, oil prices fell by more than 7% last week. This was caused by OPEC+ countries increasing production volumes as well as economic slowdowns in the US and China.
Currently, a barrel of Brent crude is priced around $68. This is one of the lowest indicators since 2021.
