Elon Musk has sued Apple and OpenAI for undermining competition. They argue that the decision to integrate ChatGPT into the iPhone is an obstacle to competition.
Elon Musk's companies X and xAI have filed a lawsuit in Texas federal court against Apple and OpenAI (the creator of ChatGPT), accusing them of conspiring to hinder competition in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), writes BBC News.
It is reported that Apple and OpenAI have "captured the market to preserve their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from becoming competitors."
Apple, in partnership with OpenAI, has integrated ChatGPT into its iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems. Musk's companies believe this violates competition laws and are demanding billions of dollars in damages.
"But for their exclusive partnership with OpenAI, Apple would have no reason to refuse to feature the X and Grok apps more prominently in its App Store," the lawsuit states.
This agreement, the lawsuit says, gave the ChatGPT app an advantage in the App Store, "increasing its downloads relative to other generative AI-based chat-bots." This, according to Musk's companies, helped OpenAI and Apple "preserve their monopolies."
OpenAI noted that the lawsuit is "consistent with Musk's history of pursuing litigation." Apple did not comment on the lawsuit.
In 2024, Musk sued Altman, accusing him of commercializing OpenAI and asking the court to stop the company from becoming a commercial structure.
In February 2025, a consortium of investors led by Musk offered $97.4 billion to acquire the non-profit organization that controls OpenAI. Altman rejected the offer.
Both parties are expected to begin a court trial with a panel of arbitrators in the spring of 2026.
