The death toll from the powerful earthquake that occurred in eastern Afghanistan on August 31 has reached 1,124 people, with 3,251 people injured to varying degrees. This was reported by Zamon.uz.

According to data from the Afghan Red Crescent Society, more than 8,000 homes were completely destroyed as a result of the natural disaster.

The Taliban movement requested help from the international community. The UN announced an allocation of $5 million through its Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). Great Britain pledged 1 million pounds sterling, while China, India, and Switzerland promised to provide humanitarian aid.

The earthquake occurred at around midnight local time, 27 km northeast of Jalalabad city in Nangarhar province, with a magnitude of 6. Its epicenter was said to be at a depth of approximately 8 km. The most affected area was Kunar province, where at least three villages were completely destroyed. Significant damage was also reported in the provinces of Laghman, Nuristan, and Panjshir.

Search and rescue operations are being significantly hampered by heavy rains in the mountainous areas, the risk of landslides, and destroyed roads. It is warned that the number of fatalities could increase further.
