The Turkish government has finalized measures to set an age limit of 16 on social networks and to reorganize penalties for children up to the age of 18. This was reported by NTV.

It is noted that the bill envisions amendments to five different laws, and a package consisting of a total of 17 articles has been prepared.

This package includes two main blocks: "Procedures for Combating Juvenile Delinquency" and "Procedures for Protecting Children from Digital Threats."

Within the scope of protection from digital threats, it is envisaged that social network service operators will not provide services to children under the age of 15; meaning, social networks that are actively used internationally cannot be used by those under 16.

The section on juvenile delinquency covers children between the ages of 15 and 18 who have been involved in crimes. According to current practice, mitigating the sentence for individuals of this age was applied; for example, it is envisaged that a 24-year sentence given instead of an aggravated life sentence would be increased to 27 years, and a 15-year sentence given instead of a life sentence would be raised to 18 years.

The bill also indicates that if it is determined that the crime was committed intentionally or in a manner with severe consequences, or if the individual has previously committed an intentional crime, the court will be authorized not to reduce the sentence.
