In the New York City mayoral elections on November 4, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani could win. He is known as a Muslim, a democratic socialist, and a hip-hop fan.
Zohran Mamdani was born in Uganda to an Indian family. His mother is the famous film director Mira Nair, his father is the scholar Mahmood Mamdani. He says his youth was comfortable, but admits that this life was not like that of most people in New York.
Mamdani is a member of the largest socialist organization in the USA — the Democratic Socialists of America. He wants to raise taxes for the rich, increase the minimum wage to $30, and implement a free child care system. Before entering politics, he helped poor families and people at risk of homelessness. That is why the main theme of his election campaign is the issue of affordable housing.
If he wins, disagreements with Donald Trump could arise. Trump called him a "communist maniac," to which Mamdani replied: "I will collaborate for the interests of the city, but I will not yield to pressure."
