According to the Department's report, 39 dead seals were found from the village of Asan to the Fort-Shevchenko beach, and 73 from the Fort-Shevchenko beach to the Bautino cape.

Specialists from the Ecology Department have collected sea water samples and launched an investigation into the causes of the seals' death.

Caspian seals are considered the only mammals living exclusively in the Caspian Sea. Their length is approximately 1.5 meters, and their weight is around 80 kg. Seals mainly feed on sprat and other fish, and in winter, they give birth to a single pup on the ice.

Specialists emphasize that the number of Caspian seals is sharply decreasing and they are at risk of extinction. Their deaths are observed every year, but it is often impossible to determine the exact cause.
