Russia is negotiating with the Syrian government to review the activities of military facilities located in the country. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It concerns the future status of Russia's naval base in Tartus and the Hmeimim airbase. Questions about the fate of these facilities intensified after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, a close ally of Russia, in December 2024.

The current Syrian government, led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, has expressed readiness to continue cooperation with Moscow. At the same time, official Damascus is also raising the issue of extraditing Bashar al-Assad, who is on Russian territory, to the country.

Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated at a recent briefing that dialogue with Syria continues at a "very active pace". According to her, the possibility of changing the tasks of Russia's military presence and military facilities in Syria is also on the negotiating agenda.

"Within the framework of Syria's contacts with international partners, the issue of Russia's military presence in that country is being discussed. Also, the possible revision of the tasks of Russian military facilities is being considered," said Zakharova.

However, the Russian Foreign Ministry official did not provide specific information about the content or timing of possible changes.
