At the end of the first round of the Candidates Tournament taking place in Cyprus, Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindorov did not let go of the lead.

In the 7th round of the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026, hosted by Cyprus, the Uzbek chess player drew with the Dutch player Anish Giri. This result allowed Sindarov to maintain the lead in the tournament standings with 6 points.

Sindarov, who is participating in the Candidates Tournament for the first time, has so far remained undefeated in the competition. In previous rounds, he secured victories over Andrey Esipenko, R Praggnanandhaa, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Wei Yi. Only the games against Matthias Bluebaum and Giri ended in draws.

The winner of the tournament, which continues until April 15, will earn the right to challenge the reigning world champion, Gukesh Dommaraju, for the world championship title. The second half of the competition, which has a prize fund of 500 thousand US dollars, will start on April 7.
