Russia plans to gradually phase out Visa and Mastercard cards. This was reported by the National Payment Card System, which processes all domestic payments in the country.

According to the announcement, for this purpose, the interbank commission rates for cards of international payment systems will be gradually reduced. Specifically, it is planned to lower the commission to 1% from the beginning of 2027, and to fully abolish it starting in 2028.

This will make working with Visa and Mastercard cards economically unprofitable for Russian banks.

Let us recall that after the start of the war in Ukraine, Visa and Mastercard left the Russian market, after which the country's banks introduced the practice of extending the validity period of these cards or making them indefinite.
