Heavy rainfall in the Sariosiyo district of the Surkhandarya region caused a mudflow that damaged an international highway bridge. This was reported by Zamon.uz in a statement.
According to the report, as a result of the mudflow flood observed on June 21, water entered some residential homes and plots of land in the "Bogi Samarqand" and "Shirin" neighborhoods of the district.
The natural disaster also damaged a bridge connecting Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, located on the M-41 "Bishkek — Dushanbe — Termiz" international highway.
According to preliminary conclusions, the river's water level and flow velocity increased sharply as a result of the rainfall. This caused high pressure on the bridge supports, resulting in damage to a part of the structure.
It is noted that traffic across this bridge, built in 1977, has been temporarily restricted for safety reasons.
Currently, vehicle traffic has been organized via detour routes in the Uzun district. Specialists are studying the technical condition of the bridge and assessing the extent of the damage.
