Penalties for corruption and economic crimes have been further tightened in Uzbekistan. Now, individuals found guilty of crimes such as receiving a bribe, giving a bribe, fraud, or embezzlement and misappropriation through looting will not be conditionally released early from punishment in some cases.
This is stipulated in the Law "On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan Aimed at Increasing the Effectiveness of Combating Corruption and Ensuring the Inevitability of Liability for Corruption-Related Crimes," adopted on June 22 of this year.
The law introduced amendments and additions to a number of articles of the Criminal Code. In particular, according to a new norm added to Article 73 of the Code, persons sentenced for embezzlement or misappropriation through looting, as well as fraud, cannot be conditionally released early until they fully compensate for the damage caused.
Also, this privilege does not apply to those convicted of repeated or dangerous recidivism, or of crimes of receiving a bribe, giving a bribe, or intermediary in bribery in an especially large amount.
According to reports, this law, approved by the Senate of the Oliy Majlis on May 25 of this year, was signed by the President on June 22 and entered into force from the date of its official publication.
