U.S. military forces struck a number of targets on Iranian territory. This was reported by the U.S. Central Command CENTCOM.
According to reports, the strikes targeted missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar points. The U.S. side describes this action as a response to a drone attack on a merchant vessel the previous day.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump accused Iran of "foolishly violating" a ceasefire declared after an attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian side, however, stated that the cargo ship was targeted because it was "moving without authorization."
In a statement, CENTCOM noted that the actions of Iranian forces against merchant ships constitute a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement. At the same time, it was emphasized that these actions threaten the safety of navigation in international trade routes.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), meanwhile, accused the U.S. of "violating the agreement" and announced that its forces had carried out retaliatory strikes against U.S. military positions in the region. However, no further details were provided on this.
Tehran has called the U.S. attacks a pretext related to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
For reference, the Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important international lanes for oil and gas tankers. Any instability in this area could have a serious impact on the global energy market.
At present, concern is being expressed by the international community regarding the situation.
