In Spain, at least 900 people died as a result of abnormal hot weather observed in June 2026. This was reported by the "El Pa" publication, citing data from the country's Ministry of Health's daily mortality monitoring system.
It is noted that June 2026 was recorded as the second hottest June in the history of meteorological observations conducted since 1961. Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) rated last month as "extremely hot". The record hottest June was observed in 2025.
According to preliminary data, 623 of those who died from high temperatures passed away during one week of abnormal heat.
At the same time, June 2026 also ranked second in the number of heat-related deaths. The highest figure in this regard was recorded in 2017, when nearly 1,000 people died due to the heatwave. Official monitoring of heat-related deaths has been conducted since 2015.
For reference, since mid-June of this year, abnormal hot weather has been observed in a number of European countries. In some regions, the air temperature rose to 40 degrees, and in some places even higher. In this regard, the highest "red" level of weather danger has been introduced in some regions of France, Great Britain, Netherlands, and Italy.
