A powerful heatwave covering a large part of the United States is negatively impacting the country's 250th Independence Day celebrations and FIFA World Cup matches. This was reported by The Guardian.
According to the international research group World Weather Attribution, the high temperatures and humidity observed in some parts of the US and Canada are caused by an atmospheric pressure system called a "heat dome."
According to scientists' calculations, if the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere had not risen by 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, such an event would occur only once in a thousand years.
Researcher Theodore Kipping from Imperial College said that the current US climate is drastically different from the era when the country's Declaration of Independence was signed. Due to the scorching heat, some of the celebration events in Washington have been revised. Several people have received medical assistance as a result of the heat, and some have been hospitalized.
The extreme heat could also affect FIFA World Cup matches. In particular, the France-Paraguay match in Philadelphia is expected to take place under conditions of high temperature and humidity. Experts note that such weather could lead to delays or rescheduling of games.
It was reported that at a public event in Pennsylvania, more than 100 people required medical assistance due to the heat, and additional ambulance services were deployed to the area.
Additionally, Amtrak has canceled more than 20 train services in the northeastern US due to the high temperatures.
Experts emphasize that these situations once again demonstrate climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
