At least six people, including five children, were killed after several residential buildings collapsed in the Indian city of Mumbai due to incessant heavy rain. This was reported by the Reuters news agency.
According to reports, the tragedy occurred in the Mankhurd district in the eastern part of the city. Several two- and three-story residential buildings in the rubble area were destroyed. Among the victims there is also one woman.
The heavy rainfall also severely affected Mumbai's transport system. The Mumbai – Pune expressway was temporarily closed due to a landslide. Some flights and trains were also cancelled.
Additionally, schools and colleges in the city were temporarily closed due to heavy rain and flooding. Reports also spread about streets being flooded and trees falling.
According to meteorologists, up to 161 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in some parts of Mumbai in the last 24 hours. The Indian Meteorological Service has warned that heavy rains may continue for several more days in several regions of the country.
