It has been reported that the tornado struck the cities of Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou, and Xianning on the evening of July 6. During the natural disaster, wind speeds reached 149 kilometers per hour. The strong winds overturned vehicles, tore off roofs of buildings, and caused serious damage to infrastructure.
According to Wang Xiaolin, a specialist from the Hubei Meteorological Administration, tornadoes are very rare in this region. The last time such an event occurred in the province was in May 2021.
Footage released by China Central Television shows vehicles and buildings destroyed by the strong winds. Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed rescue services to accelerate assistance to residents affected by floods and landslides.
Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Center has warned that heavy rains will continue in the coming days in the northeastern part of Hubei Province, as well as in the regions of Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Shandong, Liaoning, and Jilin.
In addition, Typhoon Bavi, which is intensifying in the Pacific Ocean, is moving toward Taiwan. Meteorologists have reported that it will begin affecting the island from July 10, with some areas possibly receiving over one meter of rainfall.
The Taiwanese government has put nearly 29,000 military personnel on standby in preparation for a potential natural disaster. According to expert forecasts, Bavi may weaken slightly as it approaches Taiwan, but it will still pose a danger as a strong typhoon.
