Iran's deceased supreme leader Ali Khamenei was buried today, July 10, at the Imam Reza shrine in his birthplace Mashhad. Thus, the several-day mourning ceremonies came to an end.
According to reports, due to a sharp increase in the number of people coming to bid farewell to Khamenei in the final moments, the ceremony organizers were forced to change the burial route. As a result, the funeral procession carrying the coffin did not reach the shrine, and the body was brought by helicopter.
Funeral prayers were held in the area of the Imam Reza shrine for Ali Khamenei and the family members who died with him, with the participation of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. After that, a burial ceremony was held in a narrow circle. Media representatives were not allowed into this part of the ceremony.
The farewell ceremonies for Khamenei began in Tehran on July 3. In the following days, his body was taken to the city of Qom, then to the cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, where mourning events were held. The burial ceremony concluded at the Imam Reza shrine in his birthplace Mashhad.
