The US demanded that Iran stop attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and officially declare that all sea lanes in that area are open for international shipping. This was reported by BBC.
According to US officials, despite a memorandum of understanding signed between the parties three weeks ago, Iran has attacked commercial vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz several times.
Washington stresses that these actions have negatively impacted the fragile peace between the two sides and diminished confidence in nuclear negotiations.
It has been reported that on July 12, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr al-Busaidi will meet in Muscat, the capital of Oman, to discuss security issues in the Strait of Hormuz. The US has stated that it expects an official statement from Tehran specifically after this meeting.
A US official said that Iran must stop attacks on ships, declare the openness of all sea lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, and acknowledge the wrongdoing committed.
Additionally, a Washington representative stated that if Tehran does not take these steps, it could lead to serious consequences.
