Although Hondius has reached near the port without delay, it has not yet been allowed to approach the shore.
When the ship approached the island, a safety perimeter of one nautical mile was established around it. Spain's Minister of Health described the complex operation to prevent the spread of this unique Andes strain of the virus as "unprecedented."
On Saturday, security measures were significantly strengthened at the port, an industrial facility in southern Tenerife. Spain's military police and natural disaster response teams set up large reception areas, and access to the shore was restricted.
After the Hondius was docked around 07:00 on Sunday, medical teams are expected to screen everyone to check for signs of the virus. According to the latest reports, no one else is showing symptoms.
The WHO is monitoring the situation and has assessed Spain's measures as effective.
