A fire at a children's home located near the capital of Algeria has resulted in at least 11 deaths and 19 people injured to varying degrees. Euronews reported this.
According to reports, the incident occurred today, July 16, around 03:30 local time at a children's home in the Mohammadia commune, east of the capital Algiers.
Rescue services arrived at the scene promptly. Six fire trucks, six emergency medical teams, and special equipment were deployed to extinguish the fire.
Initially, it was reported that 16 people had been affected by the fire. Later updated information indicated that the number of injured had reached 19. Among them are those with burn injuries, smoke poisoning, and respiratory problems.
Additionally, rescuers evacuated five more people from the building who needed assistance. The causes of the fire are currently under investigation. Rescuers continue search and inspection operations at the scene.
Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Gherab visited the hospital and checked on the condition of the injured.
For reference, a strong heatwave has been observed in Algeria in recent days. Experts note that high temperatures are causing an increase in the number of fires in various regions of the country.
