Former Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has officially taken office as the Prime Minister of Great Britain. This was reported by The Guardian.
56-year-old Burnham has become the seventh politician to hold the position of Prime Minister of Great Britain in the last 10 years.
The new Prime Minister announced that he would develop a "10-year plan" for the country. He emphasized that this plan is focused on long-term solutions to systemic problems in the country, rather than on the issue of how long he will remain in the position of Prime Minister.
Burnham has set himself tasks such as reducing problems related to the rising cost of living for the population, increasing the efficiency of public services, and stimulating economic growth.
'We will focus on reducing the financial pressure on people. People are worried about simple things — going out for a drink on Friday, spending time with their children, or the opportunity to go on vacation,' said Burnham.
One of the first decisions of the new government was to abandon the plan to introduce a mandatory digital identification document for all employees.
In foreign policy, Burnham is expected to emphasize maintaining Great Britain's relations with the USA, Ukraine, and European countries.
Due to Great Britain's cooperation with the USA within the 'Five Eyes' intelligence alliance and its dependence on Washington in the security sphere, London's likelihood of engaging in open confrontation with the USA is assessed as low.
At the same time, it is reported that Burnham is in favor of increasing pressure on the Israeli government, including imposing additional sanctions and banning trade in goods from illegal Israeli settlements. He has also apologized for Great Britain's initial support of Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip.
On the issue of Ukraine, Burnham believes that Great Britain's security is directly linked to Ukraine's security. Therefore, London's policy of supporting Kyiv is expected to continue.
Burnham's approach to relations with the European Union is also in focus. He previously stated that he would like Great Britain to rejoin the European Union within his lifetime.
However, experts suggest that the new Prime Minister may first focus on the country's internal problems rather than on "rebooting" relations with the European Union.
