The ruling Justice and Development Party, led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is discussing the issue of transitioning the country to a semi-presidential system of governance. This was reported by the newspaper "Ekonomim".
According to reports, the issue of transitioning to a mixed system that combines features of a presidential and parliamentary republic is being considered within the framework of planned constitutional reforms.
The proposed changes are justified by the need to strengthen the powers of parliament and ensure that the ruling party holds a majority within it. Within the framework of the reforms, a proposal to transition to a single-member electoral system has also been put forward.
According to the newspaper, this issue was discussed during a recent meeting between representatives of the Turkish Democracy Foundation and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Officials have not yet commented on this information. Erdogan, meanwhile, has previously called debates about Turkey's return from a presidential system to a parliamentary system of governance futile on several occasions.
Turkey transitioned to a presidential system of governance in 2018, after adopting constitutional amendments through a nationwide referendum in 2017.
