US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing a 50 percent tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. This was reported by Zamon.uz.
The White House explained this decision by the trade restrictions applied by Canada on US products.
The new tariffs cover wine, furniture, sports equipment, and a number of other products. However, energy products, potash fertilizers, fish products, and critical minerals are not included in the list of new duties.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney assessed Trump's decision as contrary to the US–Canada–Mexico free trade agreement. He stated that his government would protect Canadian workers and businesses and further accelerate trade negotiations with the US.
Carney also emphasized that Canada could take retaliatory measures if necessary. The parties have been given a 30-day period to conduct negotiations before the new tariffs take effect.
Experts note that the new duties could further strain trade relations in North America, lead to higher prices for some products, and intensify economic tensions between the two countries.
