The World Cup final between the national teams of Spain and Argentina was watched by 62.8 million viewers in the United States. This set a new record for football broadcasts in the country.
According to the publication Axios, nearly 39 million people watched the match via the Fox Sports television channel. This is 132 percent more than the audience for the 2022 World Cup final held in Qatar.
Another nearly 24 million viewers watched the final via the Telemundo television channel, which broadcast it in Spanish. This figure is more than 50 percent higher than the audience for the World Cup final in Qatar.
According to the publication, the record audience shows growing interest in football in the United States. This could also lead to an increase in the price of broadcasting rights for major football tournaments in the future.
For comparison, the World Cup final between Italy and France held in Germany in 2006 was watched by 17 million people in the United States. This is nearly four times less than the audience for the 2026 World Cup final.
Let us recall that the World Cup took place from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For the first time, 48 national teams participated in the tournament. At the end of the competition, the Spanish national team won the championship.
