US officials plan to collect a 30 percent tax from the prize money of the Spanish national team, which won the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Citing foreign sources, Zamon.uz reported.
According to reports, the Spanish national team received $53.5 million in prize money for its victory in the tournament. Under US tax law, more than $16.05 million of that amount may be collected as tax.
It is noted that FIFA typically exempts competition winners from taxes in the host country. However, the US side stated that in this case, the Spanish national team should be assessed not as a single organization, but as a delegation consisting of individual taxpayers.
Some US congress members have emphasized that foreign delegations should take into account the country's tax requirements in advance. At the same time, some lawmakers have criticized the applied 30 percent tax rate.
