Iran is expected to receive the first batch of Chinese-made shoulder-fired air defense systems to restore its air defense system after armed clashes with the US and Israel. Reuters reported this, citing its sources.
According to sources, under a contract estimated at $60–70 million, Iran plans to purchase 300–400 MANPADS-type air defense systems, including QW-12 and FN-16 models.
It is noted that this agreement is one of Tehran's largest initiatives to enhance its short-range air defense capabilities since the start of the war with the US and Israel.
It is reported that the contract was concluded through Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, registered in Hong Kong. It acted as an intermediary between the Iranian side and the Chinese supplier.
According to sources interviewed by Reuters, strikes by the US and Israel on missiles, drones, and air defense system-related facilities have exposed weaknesses in Iran's military infrastructure. Therefore, Tehran is trying to restore its armament capabilities.
Iran's Foreign Ministry did not comment on this report. China's Foreign Ministry denied the information, saying the reports are "completely baseless." Beijing stressed that it supports resolving any conflict peacefully.
According to sources, although the contract has been signed, the delivery time, exact quantity, and technical details may change. Under the initial plan, the weapons will be shipped through the Chinese city of Urumqi and delivered to Iran via Pakistan.
However, it is not yet known whether the transport will be carried out by air or land.
Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) called reports that the country is involved in delivering air defense weapons from China to Iran "completely fabricated and false."
According to military analysts, MANPADS-type systems can be quickly deployed and easily moved by small units. Therefore, they are considered less susceptible to precision strikes compared to stationary air defense batteries.
According to Reuters sources, Iran has also explored the possibility of purchasing QW-12, QW-18, and QW-19 systems. Tehran has also discussed using land routes for delivering Chinese military products and dual-use components.
