In the city of Panjakent, Tajikistan, local authorities and law enforcement agencies have launched raids against clothing deemed inconsistent with national traditions. Local media reported this.
According to reports, in photographs distributed on August 4 by the local branch of the People's Democratic Party, officials are seen talking with women and girls wearing headscarves that cover the head, neck, and shoulders. A police officer was also next to them.
According to authorities, the purpose of these measures is "to prevent the intrusion of foreign culture and preserve national identity."
However, it has not yet been reported how many women and girls have been interviewed as part of the raids.
According to the source, some women who wear hijabs refused to speak openly about their conversations with authorities. They expressed concern that this could cause problems in their personal lives or work.
It should be recalled that in June 2024, Tajikistan's President Imomali Rakhmon signed the law "On Responsibility for the Education and Upbringing of a Child" and amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses.
According to it, the import, sale, promotion, and wearing of clothing deemed "alien to national culture" are prohibited. Fines have been established for violating these requirements.
At the same time, the legislation does not provide a clear definition of the concept of "alien clothing." However, in practice, Tajikistan's authorities have been applying restrictions on women's hijabs and certain religious garments.
