Cuba is developing solar energy amid fuel shortages and frequent power outages. At least 59 solar power plants have been built in the country in the last two years. Zamon.uz reported this, citing foreign sources.
According to The Wall Street Journal, 41 of them are medium-capacity plants, and 18 are small-capacity plants. The government plans to increase the number of medium-sized stations to 92 by 2028.
The total capacity of the new stations could reach almost 1,000 megawatts. This is equivalent to one-third of the country's typical electricity demand.
The main equipment for solar energy is being imported from China. China's exports of solar panels to Cuba increased from $3 million in 2023 to $117 million in 2025.
At the same time, electricity supply problems persist in Cuba. At least six major blackouts have been recorded in the country since the beginning of 2026. On August 2 and 4, power supply interruptions affected the entire country.
