At least 12 people were killed and 8 more went missing as a result of floods and landslides caused by ongoing heavy monsoon rains in the Philippines. This was reported by “The Star” on August 10.
It is noted that more than 500,000 residents in 33 provinces of the country have been affected by the southwest monsoon. Rainfall has been further intensified by tropical cyclones.
As a result of natural disasters, hundreds of houses and infrastructure facilities have been damaged.
In particular, in Baguio City on the island of Luzon, 4 people died and 6 went missing after a landslide buried several houses. About 150 rescuers have been involved in search and rescue operations in the area. Due to heavy rains, new landslides also occurred in some parts of the city.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on August 10 ordered civil servants to switch to remote work because heavy rains caused flooding of cities and main streets.
Also, it was instructed to introduce alternative education methods in schools in the Manila metropolitan area and more than ten provinces.
