US President Donald Trump said he wants to run for a third presidential term. However, he emphasized that US law does not allow this. Trump stated this during a conversation with journalists during his visit to Andrews military base near Washington.
“I would like to run, but the law is very strict,” Trump said.
According to him, “everyone” wants him to participate in the election for a third term as well.
The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, introduced in 1951, prohibits any person from being elected to the presidency more than twice. Therefore, Trump's candidacy for a third term in the 2028 election is considered contrary to current legislation.
Trump was elected to a second term in the November 2024 presidential election, defeating Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris. He first served as US President from 2017 to 2021.
Trump has previously spoken several times about the possibility of serving a third term as president. In July 2026, he was also seen wearing a cap with the inscription “Trump 2028”.
