Despite the Taliban fighting against ISIS-Khorasan and other armed groups, they have not been able to fully eliminate the terrorist threat in Afghanistan. This was stated in a report by the UN Security Council sanctions monitoring group stated.
According to the report released on August 10, Afghanistan still remains a serious source of danger for Central Asia and neighboring countries.
The document lists ISIS-Khorasan as one of the biggest threats to the Taliban government and the region. Although the group has suffered heavy losses as a result of operations by the Taliban and Pakistani special forces, it has restored its capabilities. UN experts said its ability to carry out major terrorist attacks remains.
ISIS-Khorasan fighters have mostly moved to northern Afghanistan and border areas with Pakistan. It was stated that group members are using drones, night vision devices, and thermal equipment.
The report also notes that the "Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan" (TTP) group has become more active. Its attacks in Pakistan have further strained relations between Kabul and Islamabad. According to UN data, TTP fighters are moving freely on Afghan territory.
It was also stated that al-Qaeda's position in Afghanistan persists and that the organization provides ideological, military, and logistical support to the TTP.
The document also highlights as threats the activity of the "East Turkistan Islamic Movement" (ETIM/TIP), as well as the fact that weapons left from the US and the former Afghan government army are falling into the hands of armed groups.
UN experts also noted ISIS-Khorasan's interest in chemical and biological weapons, as well as its use of artificial intelligence in preparing propaganda materials.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, however, rejected the accusations in the report, saying that the terrorist groups mentioned in it have no connection to Afghanistan.
