Near the city of Dendermonde in Belgium, construction workers laying a sewer pipe found a gold treasure worth about 9 million euros in the basement of an old building. Bild reported this.
The treasure was discovered during renovation and sewer work in a building that belonged to a former brewery. The gold had been hidden between the walls in the basement.
An 18-year-old student named Kobe, working on the construction site, was the first to notice the find. At first, he thought the shiny coins he saw were ordinary money. During the excavation, however, gold coins and bars emerged from between the walls.
According to preliminary estimates, the treasure contains 49 gold bars and thousands of coins. Their total value is estimated at approximately 9 million euros, or more than 10 million dollars.
Marks dating from 1957 to 1961 have been found on some of the bars. Since the building previously belonged to the local beer producer Van Assche family, it is suspected that the treasure may be connected to them.
The legal owner of the gold has not yet been determined. The finds have been handed over to the police, and the prosecutor's office is investigating their origin and possible connection to a crime.
After the news spread, people began coming to the area looking for treasure. The police urged people not to enter the construction site.
