Former Prime Minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert, has acknowledged that his country is committing war crimes in Gaza and described this war as "aimless, planless and without a chance of success." According to him, this war is one of the most disastrous and inhumane conflicts in the history of Israel, leading to the deaths of thousands of innocent Palestinians being killed.
As per Olmert's words, this war is a "personal political battle" initiated by the government of Israel with the main goal of turning Gaza into a humanitarian disaster area. He highlighted that this war was being led by a "criminal group" under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Olmert had previously emphasized that the government of Israel had not violated the laws of war in Gaza and that no official had ever ordered targeting Palestinian civilians. However, recent events have changed his opinions. According to him, Israel is now conducting a "devastating war" in Gaza.
This statement has caused major discussions within the international community. In particular, in November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity. These warrants impose an obligation on all 125 member states of the ICC to arrest them.
Olmert's criticisms could further intensify international pressure on the political and military leadership of Israel. According to him, if Israel continues its crimes against Palestinians in the West Bank, international criminal responsibility and sanctions are inevitable.
These statements could further amplify international discussions on the military operations conducted by Israel in Gaza and their humanitarian consequences.
