In India, due to the shortage of antibiotics, there has been an increase in cases of dangerous infectious diseases among the population. BBC reported this.

Research was conducted in eight major low and middle-income countries, including India, Brazil, and South Africa. It studied the resistance of CRGN infections (superbacteria) to antibiotics. The effect of eight active drugs against bacteria was assessed.

Among them, there are old antibiotics, as well as new preparations such as Colistin and Ceftazidime-avibactam. Tigecycline is considered the most widely used among them. During the research, it was found that only 6.9 percent of patients were cured with these drugs.

India ranks first in the spread of CRGN infections. The country has purchased 80 percent of the antibiotics studied. However, only 7.8 percent of those infected could be treated.

These bacteria are found in water, food, the environment, and the human gut. They are found to cause diseases such as urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and food poisoning. Especially, newborns and the elderly are at risk. Treating CRGN (Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative) infections is twice as difficult because they can resist even the strongest antibiotics.

“This infection occurs in patients of all ages every day. In many cases, no antibiotic is effective, and patients are dying”, said infectious diseases doctor Abdul Gaffar.
