In the last three days, floods and landslides have killed at least 34 people in the northeastern states of India – Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and other regions. NDTV reported.
According to the channel, more than 1,200 tourists are trapped in Northern Sikkim due to the floods. Initially, their evacuation was planned for June 1 of this year, but new landslides have prevented this. Eight tourists who fell into the Teesta River on May 29 have still not been found. The Air Force has been involved in the rescue operations.
In Meghalaya state, 10 districts, and in Tripura, more than 10,000 people have been affected by sudden floods. In Assam, 360,000 people in 764 villages have been affected by the natural disaster. Today, on June 3, the death toll in Assam alone reached 10 after two more people died.
“The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger level at Dibrugarh, Neematighat, and other places. Five more rivers have risen above the danger level. More than 10,000 people have been evacuated and housed in relief camps,” the report states.
The Minister of Home Affairs of India, Amit Shah, has promised to provide any necessary assistance to the regions affected by the natural disaster. He has made known his communication with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Governor of Manipur.
“I have been in communication with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, as well as the Governor of Manipur. We are ready to offer comprehensive support to overcome the situation caused by heavy rainfall. The Modi government stands in solidarity with the people of the northeast,” Amit Shah wrote on his social media page.
According to Assam state minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, families of the deceased will be compensated with 4 lakh rupees (approximately 4,800 US dollars).
