Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov, commenting on the court decision against former state leader Almazbek Atambayev, said he is ready to pardon him. He revealed this in his latest interview with the “Kabar” national agency.

It is noted that Sadyr Japarov emphasized that he does not interfere and will not interfere with court decisions, saying, “Regardless of what the court's decision is, we must obey it—."

“If you consider the decision to be illegal, you should appeal to higher authorities, let the Supreme Court put an end to it. No one can change the court's decision. I don't have the right either,” he added.

Furthermore, while discussing whether Almazbek Atambayev would be arrested if he returned to the country, the president reminded of his right to pardon.

“If he applies, I can pardon him. It has been six years since the Koi-Tash events. Passions have already subsided. I think the courts would not have been so harsh. Of course, this is not an opinion I am imposing on the courts, but rather my personal, civic opinion. I believe it would be better if they were limited to only probation or a fine,” Japarov said.

Let us remind you, on June 3 of this year, the Bishkek Pervomay District Court passed a sentence on the Koi-Tash events.

Former President Almazbek Atambayev was sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison, with confiscation of property and deprivation of state awards. Other defendants in the case received various terms.

Almazbek Atambaev was released for treatment by the court in February 2023. He flew to Spain and has not returned to Kyrgyzstan since then.
