The European Parliament has made a strong statement regarding the political situation in Georgia. While declaring the parliamentary elections held in October 2024 as illegal, it was emphasized that the ruling "Georgian Dream" party had fully taken control of state institutions, implemented repressive legislation, and was ruthlessly persecuting political opposition, journalists, and peaceful protesters.

The document recommends that the European Union impose personal sanctions against the main leaders of the "Georgian Dream" party and individuals responsible for political repressions. It also calls for new, open, and fair elections in Georgia with the participation of international observers.

"Considering the continuing departure from democracy, the European Parliament calls for a complete review of the European Union's policy towards Georgia, as well as an analysis of the implementation of the association agreement signed with Georgia," the parliamentary report draft states.

Lithuanian member of the European Parliament Rasa Juknevičienė described the situation in Georgia as "a clear example of how Russia's interests have conquered the country from within without firing a single shot."

"But the Georgian people are not giving up. They have been on the streets for over 200 days — despite the repressions. We, the European Union, owe it to the courageous Georgian people who aspire to freedom and Europe. It is time to act — before it's too late," she said.
