The Latvian government has prohibited citizens of Russia and Belarus from purchasing real estate within the country's territory. This was reported by the “LSM” publication, referencing the new law on “Restricting transactions posing a threat to national security”.
The law applies not only to individuals but also to legal entities — that is, companies from Russia or Belarus. The restrictions apply to transactions concluded after the law’s entry into force.
However, there are some exceptions. If a citizen of Russia or Belarus has the right to permanent residence in Latvia, they can buy a single residential house. Nonetheless, individuals with refugee (asylum) status cannot benefit from this privilege.
In addition, inheriting real estate or acquiring property rights through a court decision are also exempt from this ban.
Latvia has implemented such measures to strengthen national security, as well as to reduce geopolitical risks associated with Russia and Belarus.
