The court in Tunisia has sentenced the former president Moncef Marzouki to 22 years in absentia. He has been accused of posing a threat to state security as a vehement critic of President Kais Saied. This has exacerbated concerns about increasing pressure on critics among the opposition, reports "Zamon.uz".
Marzouki, who was president from 2011 to 2014, has accused Saied of establishing an authoritarian regime by dissolving the parliament and seizing all power. Saied, on the other hand, considers these measures necessary for the stability of the country.
This is the third sentence issued against Marzouki; last year, he was also sentenced to eight years and four years in prison on different charges.
That same morning, a high-ranking representative of the leading opposition party – Ennahda, Sahbi Atig, was also sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of bribery.
In April, another group of opposition leaders, entrepreneurs, and lawyers were sentenced to prison terms of up to 66 years. Today, many political leaders in Tunisia, including the head of the Free Constitutional Party, Abir Moussi, and the leader of Ennahda, Rached Ghannouchi, remain in prison.
