French President Emmanuel Macron called the US strike on nuclear facilities in Iran illegal. He stressed that such attacks contradict international law norms and are baseless.
“These strikes have no legal grounds,” – said Macron during a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
According to him, neutralizing Iran's nuclear infrastructure could, in a way, be a targeted direction, but it should only be achieved through diplomatic and technical means.
Macron added: “There are clear rules in international law regarding the use of force. It can only be applied with the consent of the UN Security Council or for the purpose of self-defense. The US action – is outside the framework of international law”.
The French leader also expressed absolute opposition to the idea of changing the regime in Iran by military means.
“Each time we've made such a choice, we made a mistake,” – says Macron.
As US-Iran relations become more tense, the impact of Western leaders' critical statements on the regional balance remains uncertain. France's position, however, is clear: negotiations, not attacks.
